Well last day of term and nothing better to do again. The site is now most impresive. Well done you've actually managed to make driff look like a half decent place to go visit - nobody would like to live there as its almost a freaky as Royston Vasey (thats the league of gentlemen to anyone uneduacted - i'll say no more on that point not wanting to insult the schools there as both my parents were/are teachers at driff secondary but I mean for a school to get good grades there has to be a fairly decent base of intelligent, well behave pupils - so driff school is shagged then)
And to those people who go on about the "Millennium Clock" being a good idea - have you actually seen the pathetic thing - don't you think the money could have been better spent? And it wasn't even finshed on time for the millennium - great!
Not that i don't like the place - fresh air, quiet, fairly cheep beer in decentish pubs - of which there are quite a few, most of which would lose a sizeable chunk of profit if the legal age limit for drinking was enforced. But then again who can blame them, the underage drinkers - not much else to do is there really - apart from play football, rugby, hockey take up swimming or a martial art, go to the gym etc. Ok so there isn't much in the way of entertainment - such as a cinema or theatre - but considering its only a short drive to Scarbough or Hull thats not suprising really.
Driffield is what it is - a quietish central rural town in NE England - anybody expecting an lively atmosphere you get in a larger town or city is probably deluded (confused to anyone not that well educated) sorry I being patronising (that means taking down to).
Anyway looking forward to coming home - makes a change - also i can get some revision done. Merry Christmas.

As a regular visitor to this site (and with bugger all to do), I'd thought I'd add a few comments about Driffield.

Firstly, does anyone remember Mr Camish - Teacher at Driffield Secondary School. Also Mrs Storey who tried her best to instill some English into use. Bit of a problem there, as we of 3M and 4M (M for Moron) were a happy go bunch of no-hopers (ei thick as pig shit). I always thought that I would be the lucky one and get a job after leaving school, while my fellow class mates would end up in either prison or as dole scum.

Actually, I ended up signing on for nearly sixteen years before ending up in 'ull and Hull Time Based Arts, where (depending on which member of staff you talk to) I'm either a House Manager, Physical Resources Co-Ordinator or a bloody caretaker of £3.60 a F****** hour.

Ah, Driffield - what happy memories. We lived at 18 Woldholme Avenue, Driffield, YO25 7RW (until I moved to Brid. and the Post Office changed the post-codes). Reference Brid: Never go for more than a day. I spent nine years in that sodding place. But I'm over that now. Honest! I mean I've managed to rid myself of the realisation one gets when waking up and suddenly realising your in f****** HELL! I mean I........

Sorry. I am over it....... Social Services and my Doctor say I'm over it. I look forward now - which mostly consists of remembering happier days spend in Driffield - eg THE PAST.

Ah, Driffield. Where Crime is Nil. Where no one smokes pot and everyone loves each other (reference to inter-breading).

The People I knew

Ian Bowes (mum owned a sweat shop on Exchange St.)
Mark Grant (from a farm at Watton)
Dave or David Cook (and his Sister)
The chap from Kilham, whose name I keep remembering, but not at this very moment.
Some chap who brought a porn magazine to class and thereby demonstrated that teachers have a wank-mag detector inserted somewhere in/on their persons.
Teachers:
Most of the PE teachers (circa 1972-82).
Mr Camish, who would later cycle across America to raise funds for charity!
Mrs Storey - English teacher to those for whom English was their second language (after Yorkshire).
Mr Fell (?)
Headmaster (Bugger if I can remember their names)
Science and those bloody Bunsen Burners (hated the bloody things)

School Dinners. Ah, School Dinners. For those interested in the social history of Driffield, my first school meal at 1st year Secondary School consisted of roast lamb, Greens(?), mash studs and mint sauce. I apologise for not remembering what was for puddy. The tactics of the class dining rota will be known to many of you, but here goes. A list of classes (times two years), would go into a hat and you would be requested to arrive on time for your slot (Monday you might be at the bottom of the list, but the following day you might be at the top of the list). If your class was in early (the first eight classes) you would be afforded a full menu (a choice), if your class appeared in the middle of the rota, you ran the risk of being offered a reduced menu (shite - bugger all), but if your class appeared at the bottom, at least you would be offered shite - bugger all, but with the added bonus of seconds. And thirds. And fourths. And "not you again, bugger off!"

The queue of pupils would stand in line to be periodically questioned as to what class are you from, by some bored (or boring) teacher. Too early and you would have to come back, too late and you would have to come back later(?) By the way this was when there was a choice of one or two main courses and acne was containable (ei before chips appeared on every menu) Tripe and Chips. YUM!

Next. Shops!

Sokells. FACT! Hell will Freeze over if Sockells ever closes. I remember my first Airfix model bought there in 1973 (this was when they occupied two shops - side-by-side). Each year they held model competitions. NOT ANYMORE!!!!

By the way, for the younger readers (apologies for the bad language, speling and poor grammer, not to mention the total lack of interest in PS2) an Airfix model is a plastic scale model construction kit and not something you find in LA's or on a PS2 game console.

Jacksons in Driffield! Remember! I remember meeting my mum (60 years old this year and still working like a Wog (Reference: Spike Milligan)) from Cindico every Thursday (for pretty much most of the late 20th century (okay 1978-1984 or their 'bouts)), where we would do our weekly shopping, which came in slightly lower that what you would pay for a Pot Noodle today! HONEST IT'S TRUE!!!!

I also remember the sweatshop next to martins on Middle Street South and buying a Milk Tray Bar for (what?) 20p. E (before it was a drug), them were the days. I remember having to walk to school and always, always being late. I was famous for it (even got a mention in Whose Who 1981). Then there was the model shop on Brook Street. HEAVEN on EARTH! Hornby (not much airfix) but trains, trains, trains! Pity I didn't have any money!

I reckon if the owner had kept his shop open for another year (or until I started to sign on), then the welfare state would have provided him with an income or modest turnover and me with a decent train set! But no! Tired of having to endure snotty-nose little shits, who would just stand their googling.com at his wares, he thought bugger this and shut up shop (with a few brats still in standing there - now googling.com at several empty shelved) and retired!

ATC - SPACE CADETS - No.252 (Bridlington) Squadron ATC (Driffield Detached Flight). RAF Driffield (Oh, not you again - always going on about bloody RAF Driffield (reference to my sister)).

From 1979 until 1983, I use to walk to camp and attend cadets!

Names.....

Bradley Brothers (eldest went into the RAF)
Cawthorne (went into the RAF)
Smith (went into the Navy, can out again and now is a graphic designer for his sins)
Webster....?
Who else!
THE BOSS

Dave Burkes! To this day I worship the ground he walked on. Pity he thought I was shite. Which was true. I couldn't march to save my life. I hated sports (and the PE teachers at School hated me for it). Get this, I didn't know what cross country orienteering was until I volunteered to have a go? MAD! I was scarred of guns and flying. I also didn't like wearing a uniform. Bugger, why did I last so long?

Mr Whitley was someone special. Why, because he treated me with respect. I liked him and he liked me. He helped me. We as a squadron recovered the remains of LW172, a Halifax that flew from RAF Driffield during the war, and which crashed, killing all onboard.

Diana Rhodes - my sister still lives in Driffield. We see each other occasionally - usually in Pizza Hut (HULL). She's a bit weary of me going on about RAF Driffield. Get this - off the 700 airfields in the UK, English Heritage consider RAF Driffield to be the second best preserved airfield of it type in the UK. And the buggers want to demolish it! MADNESS! Incidently, the best preserve airfield in the UK is also to be demolished soon! MADNESS!

I could write more on the site, but I wont. NOT YET, ANYWAY!

We came to Driffield in 1973 (via the camp). I left in 1987. I have the best of memories for this small market town located in YORKSHIRE.

Summer Holidays. Exploring the camp. Kings Mill. The countryside! Birds Singing. Road Kill! I think those who get most out of Driffield are those who explore and those who keep their ears and eyes open to all around them.

Hi Driffield!

Congratulations on a great web site - it's good to see some photos of the old town. Ah, nostalgia's not what it used to be.......
What do I remember? Fishing at Riverhead, Carling peas, 'scrambling', the accent & dialect, being scared stiff when buying beer when under-age at the off-sales hatch at The Mariners, Town hall dances and lots more!

I used to live on Market Place (my father had Johnson's baker's shop), and left the town in 1972. After some time travelling around in the construction industry I moved to Kent in 1987 to work on the Channel Tunnel and have been here ever since.

Although I still have family in the area I don't get up there as often as I would like. What happened to everyone who was in 4 Upper in 1964 at the Junior School then? It would be great to hear from anyone from then....Rich Markwell, Steve Berridge, Val Forster, Linda Harper, Steve Westaway & others....

Hope to hear from some of you.............

Best wishes

Chris Johnson

Hello everyone in Driffield. I was a student at Driffield School 1988-1995 and did some teaching there in 97-99. I am now living in Rugby, but will be moving home to Driff next summer as I have just got a new job in the area. Some people hate Driffield - but I still think of it as home and I am already looking forward to returning.

I hope you are all well, and if anyone reads this who I used to know at the school send us a message and tell me how you are getting on. All the best Chris Taylor

Well it seems to me that alot of people in this town are unhappy..but why? and what is all this stuff about a clock?? I have been on severeal occasions the clock look fine to me....except the that fact that somebody got the dimensions wrong, the pole looks way to thin, probably a design fault or something. Anyway I am starting my own Private Investigatory in driffield..so if you have a mystery to solve jump the que and e-mail me!

Did anybody notice, that there is some the strnage things going on in this town, the road on middle street north never has a snow on it, and is always steaming, where does this heat come from??

The butchers near the driffield times offce never has any meat in it??

And did you know there is a 7 floor underground facitlity underneath TESCO's I bet you didn't.

Hi to all the folks of driffield, or should i say yokles. You must be the most morbid people in the world. I know about six people from driff and they must be the only happy people in that "village". Everyone walks around as though they have just been told that they are gonna die!! And i'm sure that the millenium started on the first of january 2000 not on some stupid day in the middle of the british spring time, you is dumb, even a five year old could have put that clock up on the right day. And what a waist of money!!!! Hey you need to sort it out driif council nobody like driff and doesn't want ot live there they would rather live in Hull and that is an insult. I would say someting nice about driff but there is nothing good about it. Oh i'm sorry there is one thing, the chinese in which works the only truley happy person in driff Danny Sunley. You need to sort it or just pack up and leave the country driff. I have to say that driff is probably the worst "village" in England. I thank you!!!!

Hello Driffield. I lived there 'til I was 12 and we moved to the States in 1968. It would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me. I still have cousins there.....the Flintofts, the Willets.
I've also visited in the past, most recently in 1990, 1994.
So, how about it........Malcolm Parker? Andrew Woodcock? Any of you
blokes still around?
How about Nikki Petch, any relation to Stan Petch?...who was my dad's best friend back there.
Well, it was a great place for a beer and a visit, but glad I got to
experience the world. Don't be surprised to see me in a pub there in the near future.
