I was back in driffield for a visit in March and I must say I really enjoyed it. It had been 13 years since my last visit, way too long. It was great to see my family and friends again. Even the weather co-operated for a change. The only thing I was dissapointed with was the millinium clock, it told a differant time on each face. I am sure that the town council could have come up with something better than that. I was born and raised in Driffield so I am no stranger to the place. Hope to go back again in a couple of years

Hiya Driff.
Great to see that you have a wonderful site and rightly so.I come from Driff and spent all my youth there until I joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15!!!Having spent almost 30 years in the Service including an unexpected visit to the Falkland exactly 20 years ago.I have now found myself working on some of the largest Cruise Liners in the world,When I am in the UK I live in Weymouth which is a nice change from the Caribean, apart from the weather that is.I still have fondest memorys of Driff and will allways regard it as "My Home".I try to get up there as often as I can so maybe I will run into any Old Pals.Yours Aye Roger Sedman and keep up the good work

I've enjoyed visiting your website. I found some old photo's (believed to be taken around the 1850's) taken by M. Broak, Photographic Artist, Middle Street, Driffield, & Pickering. I believe they may be of my relatives but since they have no markings I can't tell. Does anyone recall if any "Avery's" or "Reburn's" were from that area?

Thanks so much.

I've just been reading this message board, it's always fun to see the contrast between the older generations (who, I notice, have moved away) saying that Driffield is great, and then everyone with sense saying it's crap. Brilliant. It's also incredibly funny when I see things like "how can we make driffield better? build an ice rink, or a cinema or (god forbid) a Mcdonalds."

christ. this town really needs help. And I am coming back for the summer. My face will fall off if I stay for too long I will be so bored.

Hi there. I lived in Bridlington until I was 7, then moved to cranswick. Im afraid to say that driffield is most probably the worst town in the country. The similarities to Royston Vasey are uncanny. With our local shops and the fact that no matter how hard you try, you can never leave. I have nearly finished college and am hoping to move to the other side of the country as soon as possible. I feel sorry for anyone that has to stay in Driffield and if i won the lottery i would gladly pay for the majority of you to escape this hell hole.

I (native German, now living in the USA) visited Kilham in 1975. I had a penpal who lived there at the time. Her father was retired from the RAF and was running the local pub. I is very possible that they have moved a long time ago, but if anyone can help me locate my girlfriend, her parents, or just has good advice as to how to go about it, please e-mail me.
My girlfriend's name was Jackie Warrenton. Of course, it is highly likely that she no longer goes by that last name.
Thanks.

My dad was CO of the American detachment at RAF Driffield late fifties thru early sixties. I have many fond memories of Driffield and it's people. It was in Driffield that I was exposed to the English school system, and I will add that I owe that system a debt of gratitude. I was a spoiled "Yank" with a third rate education when I attended public school in Driffield ( this was back in times when the girls were on one side, and the boys on another--and separated; perhaps wisely, by a very high chain linked fence ). Once I was able to convince my fellows that I was a "Reb" and not a Yankee, the ice melted and my new pals taught me how to make my "Conker" last longer than three hits, how to protect my "future progeny" in a game of Soccer, and how to toast bread over a coal fireplace.

I remember, with great affection, the teachers ( "new than, lahds, tha weel oopin thah boowks owin ta pahge thray..."), Cadging "pennies for the Guy" to buy bangers a week prior to Nov. 5th, and the simple and honest kindness that was shown to me by the families of my chums who lived in lesser circumstances than I could understand at the time.

Time changes many things, but not good memories. I am sad for anyone that deems it necessary to detract from the simplicity and wonder and honesty of their heritage in this beautiful little town. I miss the fish & Chips, the little country lanes lined with hedge rows, the fields and haystacks we used to play in (often to the tolerant concernation of the farmers whose livlihood and hard work we insouciently ravaged), and the shops, and the aromas of life in a small rural town. Godspeed to all who might find Driffield "boring", and who yearn to other inducements. Go forth and discover the World with my blessings; I hope you are not disappointed with what you find.

I dedicate this message to Theakston, who used to call me "Yank" with an invective it took me years to understand. To Theakston, who used to make insulting paper cut-outs of my dad, and who taunted me at every possible occassion. If you are out there, Mr. Theakston, Cheers, mate! ... from a spoiled "Reb". I miss you. Then, again, to the people of Driffield; young and old, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, AND,THANK YOU! Nothing can ever rob me of these truly fond memories.

"i run this town" (below) appears to be getting a little excited. I guess that he (she? No, it must be he) has just left Driffield for the first time in his short life in order to live for three years at our expense whilst undertaking some 'worthwhile' degree course. Upon his arrival he appears to have noticed the fact already known to most other people that there are actually other places in the UK where you can buy a drink and listen to music. This is clearly a surprise to him otherwise he would not feel the need to broadcast the fact to his 'Uni chums' and to anyone else bored enough to read his bitter and twisted little message.

It obviously makes him feel better in himself to criticise Driffield and its facilities and to compare them unfavourably with what Leicester has to offer him. Sad man.

He should reflect before he next puts finger to keyboard that it is because of his comfortable upbringing in Driffield and the education it has given him that he is able while away his hours in Leicester listening to pop and drinking beer. Now had he been raised in Leicester or some other such place the story would most likely be very different. It is unlikely in those circumstances that he would now be enjoying the opportunities and luxuries which his life in Driffield has qualified him to attain or that he would even be articulate enough to write about them.

Having said that I do not know what he sees in Leicester. It is an awful place and the University is third rate.

I moved away from driffield last september to come and live in leicester for university. BEST THING I EVER DID. i came home a fortnight ago, and nothing has changed. the nightlife is still boring as hell, and there is still that strange smell eminating from everything. its actually quite funny: you pay a fiver to get into Hooters, where they claim they play the best music (that's S Club 7, Five, whatever is at no.6 in the charts). They play that stuff at my union: except that we acknowledge its all pish. and its cheaper to get in. And the drinks are affordable. if i am paying a fiver to get in, its because drinks are cheap.

fools.

I have lived in Driffield all my life and i am 15.Sometimes it can get a bit borin as there is not much to do for young people. Also, there is hardly any or no part time jobs available for people my age and this creates problems. We also need a scate park for all those people who scate in the park etc.- even though i would not be using it.i would also like to say Driffield School is brill so ignore what everyone says and most teachers are o.k. We also need some more shops such as a decent clothes shop for teens-this would do really well!

Having visited the Driffield site for the first time, I have to say that I am impressed with the setup. It is a pleasure to find a well presented site and I shall enjoy browsing from time to time despite the critics an moaners but then everyone has their place!

I was Born in Driffield, but lived in Wansford until 1967, when joined the Royal Engineers and was posted to Berlin. Three years later I left the army to work for the MOD in Germany. It is still a pleasure to visit the town and Heidi, my wife, who is German has fallen in love with the area. Heidi finds the people very helpful, patient and kind. Left to her, we would move back tomorrow but I am not about to give up my job.

Can anyone put me in with Dave Sissons, "Ginge" Ellis, Barry Hobson or David Kell? we were in the same class at Driffield Secondary School 1956 to 1959.
