It always amazes me to read about all these younger people who say there is nothing for them to do in Driffield. Instead of thinking about me, me, me, why don't they start thinking what they can do for the town to make it a better place to live in. I'm sure there are a lot of elderly people there who could use a little help even if it is just tidying thier gardens or sweeping the path in front of thier houses, just little things like that that can make a differance in thier lives. If we just take from a place and never give anything back then pretty soon it is bled dry. It would give the young people something to do as well as making life a bit easier for the elderly. Why don't they adopt a street and pick up the trash etc. If they really looked around they would find plenty to do. It might not be as entertaining as they would like but it is a start.

just wanna say goodbye to driffield. lived here all my life, and now, i am thankfully leaving. i had good times cuz i grew up here, but if i do ever come back here, it will be far too soon. i wont miss the place, and there will be very few ppl that i miss. remember - driffield aint the only place in this world, and when you leave, (if you ever do) yu will realise that collecting ur dole every other thursday, and your friday nights in mavericks are all pretty mundane. (you all know who you are) ppl in driff made my life hell! well, now im leaving you all behind, with your narrow minds, and your intense need to stir trouble for anyone who does not fit into your "group". driffield is good for people who dont wanna go anywhere in life, perfect for you guys (agen - u know who you r!) so - here it goes, im goin, n i definatly wont be looking back.
goodbye

My mother Jessie Patricia Boddy was brought up in Little Driffield, and for years used to tell my brother and sister and I that graffiti was not a good thing - that was until we found she had carved her name or initials on the little stone bridge when she was a lot younger - I am apologising on her behalf!!!! and promise that we are doing our best to bring her up in a more responsible fashion

Hi
My dad was stationed at Staxton Wold from 1979 to 1981. I attended Driffield Primary School for 1 year and then went to Driffield Comprehensive for another two and a half years. We lived at Alamein Barracks during this time, can't remember the number..it was in front of the large field near the swings. I can't remember many names..I remember some teachers at school..Ms Yates..Ms Burnham...some friends at school...Nicola Birch, Pauline Lodge, Caroline Milner, Sue Coleman, Kate Barber....memory fails here!!! On camp there were loads of kids..Jackie, Karen...memory fails again..I used to go horseriding close by. Mum worked at the Bell Hotel, then at Cindico...It was a real experience.

Great site!!

just like to say i was born in driffield. in Brook street, attended primary school at wandsford road, juniors at cross hill, and then went on to bridlington high school.I left Driffield when I got married, I still have relatives there. It was great to read all about driffield and see all the photographs.

someone mentioned the Zanzibar, 9in Mill Street, I worked there in the early sixties. Those were the days, we always found something to do, not like todays youth who just moan and moan and dont do anything about it!!

if anyone remembers me send me an E Mail.

Are we taking bets as to whether the pool will ever be fully refurbished?
The powers that be say it will re open in the next few days, after temporary repairs are finished.
But the East Riding Council keeps waffling around the question of major refurbishment. It now looks like next year ---- at the earliest.
Councillors have agreed to set aside some money but if the spending budget gets cut - as it may do - then the project may be in danger.
Questions need to be asked now
So, people....start asking them......

There is a Tom & Susan Hardbattle buried in Driffield Cemetery. Tom died in 1906 aged 49 so he's about the right age for PC Hardbattle who was PC of Nafferton in 1879 (only year I am sure of). Another Tom & Mary Ellen buried their son, also a Tom, in 1954 aged 44. Probaby the grandson of the PC. I can exact locations if you want to visit the graves and see for yourself? Stumbled on this by chance.

I was born in Nafferton in 1941, attended Bidlington School by means of the infamous "Driffield Bus" from 52 to 57. Then I joined the Army and found that there were many worse places than Driffield. Does anyone remeber me? I`m retired now, residing in Rossington near Doncaster.

Driffield is possibly the most boring place in yorkshire. I'm sure that old people can find alot to do but what about the teenagers. We don't get anything because the council spend there money on computers houses for some of the small villages. Who's dumb idea was that, i've never seen one been used yet. And we have driffiled show every year which is fun if your about 4 or older than 40, why don't we arrange some open air concerts and stuff? And all the people who keep complaining and trying to stop the skatepark been built because of the damage the skateboarders cause on walls and stuff. What do you think they're going to do if you stop the skatepark. They won't have anywhere else to go so they'll carry on skating the walls and banks in driffield so if anything you should be supporting the skatepark.

Hello

Does anyone remember Tony Clayton (now 37), who use to live in Driffield with his parents on camp circa 1977-1979? He went to Driffield Secondary School. I heard he joined the Royal Marines in 1984. With the War in Iraq raging on, my thoughts are with him. I just want to know if he's still in the Marines, and if so is he safe?

Kind Regards

Phillip Rhodes

Its bad enough that I keep getting spammed to death by these credit card debt offers. It seems like everywhere I turn I see ads for repair credit this and that. Now these companies are posting messages on your guest book to advertise their credit counseling services? Give me a break! Maybe some of us don’t mind having bad credit and just want to use the Internet in peace. Post your junk elsewhere.

message for sue - australia doing family research on kilham - emma nee ireland. I have discovered that my great, great, great grandma's maiden name was margaret ireland, she married at kilham church in 1812. i believe there are quite a lot of irelands buried at kilham church yard and and hoping to try to research further back. we maybe distantly related in more ways than one as margaret was my father's great, great grandma and i am now married and called ireland so the name has come full circle in just under 200 years. I hope to spend my holidays next year travelling through Yorkshire and your site has been invaluable in planning the trip. I can't wait to see Driffield. Thank you for the opportunity to read up on your town. As a committed Anglophile I found your site while surfing for English sites. Now that I'm semi-retired, I'm putting my fondness for English village life to good use (I hope!) in a series of cozy murder mysteries that I've had published. Look forward to being in Driffield next year.

Best wishes to all,

Greetings,

Me...Born in Driff in '56 and lived there until the age of 12. Moved to the States in 1968. I went to Brid school my last year there. If anyone remembers me, I'd be happy to hear from you. People I remember.....Andrew Woodcock, Stuart Foster, Mike Pratt, George England, Malcolm Parker and of course, my cousins (they know who they are!) who still live there.
I think I recognize a couple of names posted here...Dawn Hall-I remember her from RAF since I used to go up there to visit Linda Vincent. Both were in the junior school by the police station when I was there.
Anyway, great to see a website that clears some cobwebs of my days there.
Cheers.

In 1945 I came back to the UK from Italy and was stationed in Driffield. We were billeted in private houses on the Road to Nafferton. Our stay was only a few weeks as we departed for the Far East within two months.

I remember Driffield fairly well and it was a very pleasant place to be, pity I could not have stayed longer. Just prior to leaving for a Troopship at Southampton we moved from Driffield to Nafferton where we were billeted in a Church House which may have been the rectory
or manse.

Happy memories

Congratulations on a fine site, I doubt if anyone will remember this ancient old guy, I came to live in Driff.at the age of 3yrs some68 yrs ago you don't have to be a mathematician to find my age, I lived @26 new road with the Winter family my step mother was Betty. I went to the old council school Mr Dukes was the Headmaster, on reflection he did have a terrible job with us lot during WW2 when all male teachers were away at war. But he did a fine job all the naughty boys were lined up at the assembly on a Monday morn. & the "Gaffer" used the knotted rope!! I had a calling to go to Sea and went as an Engineer that was in 1951 after years at the Hull Tech. and an apprenticeship. it was quite a problem catching the 6.30 am bus to Hull and then getting back home after night school at around 10.30pm Oh Happy days.

I left the sea after becoming Chief Engineer and finished up working in London (opposite Harrods) for some 25 yrs with one of the major oil cos.
Lots of water has gone by since those happy boyhood days even during the war years when all food including "goodies" were on ration. I did an errand boys job at Walter Wilsons uncle Tom Julian was Manager. My friend Arthur Adams (who also went off to sea worked opposite at Jacksons) I remember his mum also worked their. We made our own fun in such wonderful surroundings which you do not appreciate at the time.
My best Pal was Horsley Dawson who's dad had a small printers/shop in middle street, we used to "borrow" some of his Dad's printers lead and cast toy soldiers which we sold in his Dad's shop!!Only pocket money you understand.
Could go on forever on recalling the good times in those bygone days.
Hope whoever does tread this tiny account will not be too bored, also anyone who may have been around then.....

I am reseraching my family and have found that my grandmother, Amy Marion Spencer was born in Driffield around 1888 and was the daughter of Thomas Spencer and Helen Spencer (nee Pope).

The family owned a grocery business, which was at 12/13 Mill Street, and Thomas's brothers Alfred owned a baker's at 39 Exchange Street and William a wholesale business at 19 Middle Street.

They had seven children - Alfred who I believe inherited the family grocery business, and had a daughter; Alwyn who was a painter and decorator; Arthur who became a chemist, emigrated to Canada then returned when he contracted cancer; Amy who married my grandfather; Lily who married William Payne but returned to Driffield; Florence who married a Billy Hopper or Harper; and Evelyn who married a Norman Slingsby.

If anyone has any further information on the family or knows of any of the buildings or anything else which may be interesting please contact me.

I intend visiting the area after Christmas.

Thank you.

Hi Driffield,

I was stationed at 203 AFS at Driffield 1952-55. Have happy memories of the `service club' in Driffield that used to feed and cheer-up us lonely 'erks.

I was a gas-turbine mechanic, working on Meteors. I also remember all too well those icy blasts that would sweep in from the North Sea over the Wolds, where I was shivering out on the runways.

It's only just coming to light, but Driffield was the site of a top secret experiment in the 1960s. Sweaty Betty's fish shop was actually a deep-cover CIA outpost selling genetically modified fish BUT NOBODY REALISED. We're only now starting to see the results...

Best wishes to all, Brian
