Deep
within the Gypsey Race valley is the small rural settlement of
Butterwick. It is made up of houses, farms and associated
buildings with agriculture being the main occupation.
Sheep
graze in the churchyard of the tiny little stone built church with
a cross mounted high on the narrow bell tower. The church contains
a Norman Font and on its south side there is an effigy dating back
to 1320 of a figure representing Robert FitzRalph who was the 2nd
Lord of Grimthorpe. He has a shield which depicts the Grimthorpe
coat of arms.
