Garton
on the Wolds |
The A166
runs through the middle of this Yorkshire Wolds Village but cannot
ruin its sense of peace. On the Main Street the Village pond and
its inhabitants, a large number and variety of ducks, attract
families from the village and further afield. Also on the main
street is the Weslyan Chapel built in 1894 which now stands empty
and the Methodist Chapel built in 1871 which is used as a workshop
by the Village joiner.
The War Memorial stands on the corner of Station Road where the
village C of E School can also be found. The Village now has a
public house called The Venture Inn which was converted from a
house in recent years. There is also a charming house called
Woodford House well known for its flowers, frames and herbs.
Garton on the Wolds is famous for St Michaels and All Angels
Church. This fine Norman Church, established by Kirkham Priory in
1132, stands in a commanding position on a rise above with village
presiding over its parishioners on one side and having spectacular
views across the Wolds on the other. The nave and the tower are
believed to be from this period although the top of the tower was
added in the 15th Century along with the clock. In the
19th Century the church was restored by G.E.Street and
now has some of the finest examples of his work. People come from
miles around to visit the church with its richly coloured
frescoes, reredos, painted walls and ceilings. There is also
beautiful tile work and mosaic pavements. The fine lych gate which
leads into the church yard is also by Street.

Warcup DCM BEM MD
I was born in Garton, 1948,
four doors from Harry Hodgsons shop.
Question?
J Warcups war history?
Whilst visting my brother and fathers grave at St Michaels and all
Saints spotted "CSM Jim Warcup DCM BEM MD" headstone. If
he had been an MD ( medical doctor ) he would have been an
officer, not a company sargeant major. He was also the village
butcher as far as I remember. Any one out there with further
information, as to be awarded the DCM he must have done something
beyond the norm,
please forward me some information to further research.
Yours Richard, son of Gladys and Stanley Welburn, Garton on the
Wolds. 1938-1960 approx

family information
I am looking for any
information on the Garton family history. My grandfather and
Greatgrandfather both named Joseph Garton, they moved to Australia
in approx. 1930's.
I would greatly appreciate any information on the Garton family
from Yorkshire as I will be returning to the UK next year and want
to trace my heritage.
